Moura Starr debuts a highly unusual collection of sculptural lighting from France curated by creative director Shelley Starr.
Clearly inspired by nature, the collection features a hand-hammered bronze tree sculpture with hand-blown glass drops hanging from branches, a cascading waterfall and a confection of twigs and glass droplets. The centerpoint is a 4-foot-wide chandelier dripping with graduating layers of hand-blown glass drops.
Starr worked with the French artisan studio that created the lighting collection over a two-year period, editing and refining the design until she got it to where she wanted it to be. Exemplifying the handcraftsmanship for which Moura Starr is known, the lighting is made of hammered bronze and delicate hand-blown glass. Starr specified an aged hammered bronze finish with silver leaf plating.
The collection, which includes a traditional range of chandeliers, sconces and table lamps, joins Moura Starr’s existing body of ethereal Swarovski crystal lighting and represents a departure from the modern lighting that Moura Starr has presented to its trade audience.
The company offers approximately 140 furniture and lighting designs, though that number does not include the countless custom pieces that have been designed for clients.

BACKGROUND
Ralph Lauren started with ties. Shelley Starr started with pillows. Just as Lauren built a fashion empire, Starr is en route to creating a home furnishings enterprise.
Since 2000, Starr has brought to market a dazzling assortment of furniture that is characterized by impeccable craftsmanship, unique materials and dressmaker-like details. She already has earned the business of some of the most discriminating design clients in the United States – David Phoenix, Babey Moulton Jue & Both, Campion Platt, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Victoria Hagan, Philip Nimmo, Jennifer Post, Hariri & Hariri and the Rockwell Group – and she has just begun.
“I aspire to be the Chanel of the furniture industry,” says Starr, who adores the couture house and also likes to wear Christian Dior, Valentino, Ann Fontain and French designer Barbara Bui.

Designed to look gorgeous in tightly grained wood finishes or in black, brown, “Fendi” and white lacquers, Moura Starr furniture is the epitome of glamour by night, and by day it’s the stuff that family houses are made of. Moura Starr’s furniture collection includes dining, coffee and side tables, case goods, beds, dining and occasional chairs, benches, and bookcases. Signature Moura Starr accessories include silver trays with horn handles, brilliantly colored vases as high as 6 feet, pillows and throws, all hand-selected by Starr.
The company thrives on custom work, and the materials are the driving force.
“Designing starts with the magnificent materials with which we desire to work. It is from this point that our ideas take form and come to life,” says Starr. “Every individual design is about the art of perfecting the use of our materials and pushing the envelope when it comes to shapes and forms that we desire.”
Starr initially began producing furniture in the late 1990s, opening a store called Atmosphere in San Francisco in 2000, followed by stores in New York (SoHo) and Los Angeles. After a trip to Sao Paolo, where she discovered an unparalleled level of furniture engineering and craftsmanship, she shifted her focus to the interior design trade, closing Atmosphere and opening Moura Starr showrooms in New York’s D&D building, SoHo and the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles.
Now made in several regions of the world, including in the United States, the furniture incorporates an amazing array of materials, including rich and exotic hardwoods, lavish leathers and sheets of exquisite crystal. The wood pieces radiate with the lush, pure beauty of the specialized materials from which they are made: Louro Preto, Black Figueira, Carvalho and Pau Ferro woods, each with its own individual and distinctive colors and grains. But even within the wood from a single tree, there are different tones and colors. No two pieces will ever be exactly the same. And none of the woods are ever stained.
A retail collection debuts in Fall 2010 at Shelley Starr Home, a new Moura Starr division in New York at 121 Wooster Street in SoHo.
