Identity Design Partners Celebrate 25 Years of Branding Global Icons

Since their humble beginnings in New York City 25 years ago, award-winning designers Robert Louey and Regina Rubino have built an international reputation by blending emotionally stunning imagery with simple yet powerful language. This year the founders of Louey/Rubino Design Group will take a celebratory lap around the globe as they introduce new conceptual designs for Wolfgang Puck and revisit past successes, such as Park Hyatt hotels in Paris and Shanghai.
“Some of our identity designs for the Andaz West Hollywood Hotel and elsewhere showcase our ability to reach into the past to find a gateway to the future. In a sense, our 25th anniversary is an opportunity to honor what we’ve achieved as we expand our vision for today, tomorrow and the next project,” says Rubino.
Louey, who with Rubino has won over 300 international communication arts awards, will use one of the firm’s guiding principles — Emotion plus intellect equals clarity — to sort through the quarter-century anniversary of [branding.
“In some ways this is an emotional year, because we’ve been so fortunate to work locally with The Hotel Bel-Air, for example, and log a lot of flight time in Europe and Asia. But we also need to analyze so that we continue to build on our collaborative strengths and past successes,” he says.
Louey added that it is unusual for a small design firm to make it to the 25-year mark, remaining relevant to the global corporate community while also staying in contention for top industry awards. Normally these achievements are restricted to large advertising agencies. The design collaborators continue to attract international brands in need of identity system development as well as create and launch new brands.
Through the years, Louey and Rubino have offered Fortune 500 companies and other major entities assistance in creating identity systems that solve complex communications challenges. This often involves branding not just a corporate image or product, but entire environments. Their client list includes Alfa Romeo – one of their first clients in New York City – The Beverly Hills Hotel, Kaufman and Broad, Yves Saint Laurent., Beijing Yintai Property Company, Ltd., and Dean Witter Reynolds, Inc.
The Louey-Rubino touch is now on display at the Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill at the L.A. Live Complex near Staples Center. They also recently unveiled a rebranded Andaz West Hollywood Hotel on Sunset Boulevard, where a marriage of song lyrics and numerals identify each floor. With offices in Santa Monica, New York and Hong Kong, the identity specialists log well over a hundred thousand miles a year working with clients on five continents — a myriad of diverse cultures and industries. Large branding projects may take up to five years to strategize, design and install. And they have long-standing relationships with various corporations, such as Global Hyatt.
“We provide highly personalized branding and marketing systems. What works for a CEO in Shanghai may not be appropriate for a decision maker in Milan or Paris. Since design without a message is merely decoration, for every project we call upon the most inspired language and imagery that will best express material and immaterial values,” says Rubino, who is also the founder of Image: Global Vision, which collaborates with Louey/Rubino Design Group.
Louey, of Robert Louey Design (which grew out of Louey/Rubino Design Group), says success in business is not only about numbers and the bottom line. “The art of business is an expression of ideals and passions. We find voice and inherent meaning by combining intelligent messages with emotionally riveting images. Brand equals emotion. Without emotion there is no action by consumers.”
