Selfridges Announces Womens Designer Galleries – Art Meets Architecture in a High-Tech Fashion Environment

Selfridges Announces Womens Designer Galleries

(PRWEB UK) 24 January 2012

In February 2012, Selfridges will unveil the first phase of its transformed Womens Designer Galleries in its London store. The new Galleries are inspired by the store’s neo-classical architecture. The space features an exclusive digital art gallery and next generation fitting rooms providing an elegant and contemporary backdrop for the sophisticated woman to select and personalise a high-end wardrobe.

Hidden away from the Galleries floor, high-tech fitting rooms offer the upmost privacy, serenity and natural daylight. Customers will chose from exclusive silhouettes and designer collections in an innovative and unique environment, surrounded by a constantly changing piece of digital art from British artist Daniel Brown, a pioneer in the medium who is known for his interactive installations. At the forefront of technology is the central fitting room mirror featuring three screens mounted together. The screens have built-in cameras that allow customers to capture an image or short video of themselves on each of the panels. The images can be viewed simultaneously allowing for outfits to be compared, colour decisions to be made and fit to be checked. Customers will also have the option of emailing the images for their own records, or to a friend for feedback on their choices.

“The Womens Designer Galleries at Selfridges will showcase some of fashion’s most exciting designers in a creative setting that embraces the expectations of today’s modern woman,” says Alannah Weston, Selfridges Creative Director. “We know that our customers are sophisticated, global trend-makers and we look forward to presenting beautiful designer pieces in a serene and elegant environment.”

Customer experience is a key factor in the design, but also in the development of the service offering. Bespoke texts and emails can be sent to customers based on the designer clothes they choose, their tastes and purchasing habits when new products arrive. A dedicated ready-to-wear tailor will offer customisation directly on site.

Selfridges has curated exclusive looks from the very best of British and International design houses. The Galleries will present directional collections from a hand picked selection of both new and longstanding luxury designer collections, offering customers an advanced approach to dressing, encouraging them to personalise their choices by using high fashion pieces from different designer brands in one overall look. Eight dedicated Boutiques representing Chanel, Prada, Lanvin, Céline, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Givenchy and Dries Van Noten will be given an avantgarde edge through juxtaposition with the main edit featuring Haider Ackermann, Rick Owens, Maison Martin Margiela, Comme Des Garcons, Junya Watanabe, PLAY, Sacai, Ann Demeulemeester, AF Vandervorst and Gareth Pugh.

Selfridges Director of women’s clothing, Sebastian Manes says, “We have been very specific in the designers we have chosen for the Womens Designer Galleries at Selfridges. The concept for the room evolved in tandem with the selection of these designers in order to offer customers the collections they will love and a place to discover exciting looks of each season.”

Designed by Jamie Fobert Architects, the room will feature 10 different types of marble combined to form an eye-catching floor. “I was greatly inspired by the story of stone – how marble has been used since the time of Trajan’s Column in Ancient Rome, to Michelangelo’s David and even Marble Arch in London,” says architect Jamie Fobert. “Upon entering the space, customers will experience a room that is minimal, but feminine and graceful, yet strong.”

In celebration of the launch, Tanya Ling has developed a series of illustrations representing the modern luxury woman that will preview the space in-store. The Gallery will open in time for London Fashion Week in February 2012. Two further phases of the Womens Designer Galleries will launch in 2012 and 2013.

NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES

After The Atlanta Journal, The Sydney Journal, The Athens News and The Beijing News, the Belgian NOC has just published The London News. This publication offers information on the 2012 Olympic Games generally, and on the Belgian team athletes in particular.

The Canadian NOC has announced the creation of a coach reward programme, offering financial rewards for coaches of Olympic medal winners. This programme is part of the NOC’s new focus on coaches, which also includes a coaches’ task force looking at better recognising coaches and increasing their profile; a Games recognition programme to recognise the coaches of Olympic and Pan-American medallists when the athletes are recognised by the NOC; and another recognition programme at the Games in London next year.

On 21 November, the Costa Rican NOC celebrated its 75th anniversary at the NOC headquarters. Those attending included federation and sports association leaders and numerous athletes, including some who took part in the 1968 Games in Mexico City, the 2008 Games in Beijing and the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010. On this occasion, NOC President Henry Núñez paid tribute to fencer Bernardo de la Guardia, the first Costa Rican athlete to compete in the Games, in 1936 in Berlin, and the first Executive Committee, which was headed by Joaquin Lizano Bonilla.

For the second time, the French and German NOCs have sent six French and German youngsters aged from 18 to 23 on a mission as part of the Franco-German civic service programme. The three French participants have thus gone to Göttingen, Lüneburg and Hannover in Germany, where they will be involved in general service activities linked to health and sport, education and social integration through sport. Their three German counterparts will be involved in projects in Paris, Lyon and Versailles. Their programme will include social integration through sport projects in the Paris area and projects linked to the 50th anniversary of the Franco-German Youth Office.

The Mongolian NOC informs us that Zhang Jilong, the Chinese NOC Vice-President, Sports Director of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and FIFA Executive Committee member, recently paid a courtesy call to the NOC, where he met NOC Vice-President Tsend Damdin. Zhang Jilong also attended the opening of the new futsal indoor venue financed by the FIFA Goal project.

On 17 November, the Portuguese NOC celebrated its 102nd anniversary at a ceremony organised at the NOC headquarters in Lisbon. Those attending included the Deputy Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Miguel Relvas; the Secretary of State for Sport and Youth, Alexandre Mestre; the President of the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth, Augusto Baganha; and UK Ambassador Jill Gallard. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the 2011 NOC awards, and a tribute to the four Olympic champions with the unveiling of the “Olympic Fame” wall. IOC honorary member Fernando Lima Bello, presented the IOC’s 2011 “Sport and Social Responsibility” Trophy to the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) Secretary General, Artur Trindade.

Serbian NOC President Vlade Divac, and the President of the “Generations for Peace” organisation, Princess Sarah Al-Feisal of Jordan, recently signed a memorandum of cooperation between the two organisations in Belgrade. Through this agreement, the NOC has become a partner of “Generations For Peace” in implementing its projects in Serbia and the region. Representatives of 48 NOCs were present, as well as those from the Organising Committees of the forthcoming Olympic Games and European Youth Olympic Festivals, and the applicant cities for the 2020 Olympic Games. The agenda included an overview of 2011; and reports by the organisers of the Olympic Games in London, Sochi, Rio and, for the first time, PyeongChang. In addition, the Assembly saw the presentation of the first Best Young European Athlete Award, created in memory of Polish NOC President and EOC Executive Committee member Piotr Nurowski. The winner, chosen by the Assembly, is the young Polish cyclist, Tobiasz Lis.

ERRATUM

In last week’s Highlights, we mistakenly wrote that Vjacheslav Aminov was President of the Russian Gymnastics Federation, whereas he is in fact President of the Russian Modern Pentathlon Federation. Please note also that he was elected by the Congress and not appointed.
